I think you can change a setting in the Motorola and other makes of radio to use the generic text message format rather than the proprietary one used by different manufacturers.

As long as they are all set the same they should work.

just trying to establish how you activate a long press on these buttons?

Seems a short press is only available, if I am not missing some trick here, maybe the button field could be split in two, short press at the top, long press at the bottom?
